Since ancient times, people in Lithuania, as well as throughout the Baltic region, have crafted straw gardens (sodai) – delicate hanging ornaments that symbolize the connection between the human and the divine worlds and are believed to protect homes from evil spirits. A few years ago, the tradition of straw garden making was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a unique expression of traditional culture.
If you have never tried making a sodas before but have always been curious to learn, we invite you to join the Straw Garden Weaving Workshop at the House of Histories!
During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to admire the exceptional examples preserved in the Lithuanian National Museum’s collection of straw gardens and discover what makes Lithuanian sodai unique compared to those created in other countries. You will also learn about their symbolic meanings and traditions.
Most importantly, you will create your very first straw garden to take home.
