“Rūpintojėlis” can be translated into English in many ways — as the Sorrowful Christ, the Pensive Christ, or the Contemplative Christ. Most often depicted in sculpture, this enduring motif has become one of the most recognisable expressions of Lithuanian folk art and a powerful symbol in the shaping of national identity.
Yet ethnographic heritage has not only reflected identity, it has also served as a political tool. Throughout the twentieth century, Lithuanian folk art was mobilised to represent the nation abroad, shaping how Lithuania was perceived in the Western world.
We cordially invite you to join a guided tour through the Paris international exhibitions of the early twentieth century. Together, we will uncover little-known diplomatic initiatives, explore how folk art became a language of cultural diplomacy, trace the shifting narratives of national representation, and discover how the idea of the “Baltic Sisters” first emerged on the international stage.
