LNM House of History invites you to learn about ethnography through game

In October, an educational game stand was set up for young visitors in the courtyard of the House of History of the National Museum of Lithuania (LNM), introducing families to ethnographic symbols and inviting them to visit the ethnographic repository of the House of History, which has now become even more convenient to visit.

The educational station, created on the principle of a memory game, invites you to get acquainted with and examine the signs and symbols with which household items, clothes, and houses were decorated in traditional Lithuanian culture.

“In the game, we used the most popular symbols that express the most important values – the sun, moon, earth, water, tree of life, serpent, horses, and birds. We hope that they, like helpers from fairy tales, will help children discover the incredibly interesting, mysterious layers of Lithuanian culture,” says Audronė Daraškevičienė, educator of the House of History of the National Museum of Lithuania.

“We invite you to find the symbols that you will find at the educational station in the renovated showcases of the House of History. And those who want to learn more about them are invited to register for excursions in the ethnographic repository,” says Simona Širvydaitė-Šliupienė, head of the House of History of the National Museum of Lithuania.

She points out that the price of these chartered excursions is changing, which makes the excursions easily accessible to both small groups and individual visitors. From October 27, the price of the excursion for small groups (1–6 people) will be a visitor ticket and 3 euros for a guide service. For groups of 7 or more people, the old procedure will remain in effect: a ticket for each visitor and a fixed fee of 20 euros for the entire group for a guide.

In addition to excursions, the ethnographic repository regularly hosts various educational activities that can be booked by families, teachers for their students, and corporate groups.

According to the head of the department, the LNM History House is becoming an increasingly family-friendly space: efforts are being made to ensure that each exhibition includes a simplified narrative intended for younger visitors, and that activities, games, and interactive educational islands are being set up. “It is important to us that children in the museum are not afraid to ask out loud, play, and touch,” says S. Širvydaitė-Šliupienė.

The outdoor educational playground is planned to be expanded in the future with other forms of games. The aim is for it to become a favorite leisure space for families with children. This year, the Family Weekends that started in the courtyard of the LNM History House offered a very diverse and fun program of activities adapted to the whole family. The success of the project confirmed the need for such spaces and activities, so next year the museum will invite young visitors to an even richer program.
