Family weekend at the House of Histories – dragon orchestra, musical rhythms, and a unique performance
2025 08 06
On August 9, the House of Histories of the National Museum of Lithuania (LNM) invites families to another weekend full of sound, rhythm, creativity, and connection. From an improvised musical journey in the museum courtyard to roaring paper dragons – the House of Histories will turn into a world of adventures filled with sights and sounds.
“Family weekends at the House of Histories are designed so that children and adults not only listen or watch, but actively take part – hear, create, experience. I’m glad these weekends are becoming increasingly popular – growing visitor interest only confirms the value of these activities,” says Simona Širvydaitė-Šliupienė, Director of the House of Histories.
Musical rhythms, dragon orchestra, and the world through a dog’s eyes
The family weekend begins at 12 p.m. with the music workshop “Music for Everyone” in the museum courtyard, led by well-known musician, jazz composer, and educator Remigijus Rančys. Through improvisation and live interaction, participants will explore rhythms, instruments, and music from around the world. Why and how did music come to be? What does rhythm tell us? Why does music sometimes say more than words? This workshop invites participants to find answers not in books, but through the body and listening.
At 1 p.m., on the second floor of the House of Histories, author, illustrator, and educator Paulius Juodišius will hold the creative workshop “Let’s Awaken the Paper Dragons!”. Here, sheets of paper will turn into trumpeting dragons that not only make noise, but also help create a collective song. The finale will be loud – a concert by the “dragon orchestra” born from children’s imagination and creativity.

At the same time, at 1 p.m., children can join the interactive tour of the exhibition “History Wags Its Tail”, which invites visitors to see the world through a dog’s senses – its smell, hearing, and body language. Perfect for primary school kids, the session helps them understand not only the dog’s experience but also our shared history with animals.
Golden Stage Cross-winning performance for teenagers
At 2 p.m. in the education hall, visitors are invited to the one-man play “Rams”, awarded the Golden Stage Cross. Created by actor and playwright Raimondas Klezys and director Justas Tertelis, this performance invites teens and adults to talk about things often left unsaid – resentment, anger, forgiveness. Its interactive format and honest storytelling create space for reflection and meaningful conversation. The play is inspired by autobiographical experiences.
Mykolas the Mouse – the family weekend ambassador
This summer, the House of Histories has already hosted three themed family weekends: ethnographic, dog-themed, and royal. Alongside the events, the museum has launched a special line of children’s souvenirs featuring the family weekend mascot – Mykolas the Mouse. The collection includes stickers, notebooks, and a plush toy. Mykolas also appears in the visual identity of the family weekend series.
