Jonas Šliūpas Museum Invites You to Celebrate “Palanga Days 2025” Together
2025 03 10
The Jonas Šliūpas Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania, is joining the “Palanga Days 2025” event series and invites everyone to immerse themselves in the vibrant cultural festivities. “Palanga Days” is a week-long program running from March 30 to April 6, commemorating two significant historical events for both Palanga and Lithuania. The celebration marks the annexation of the Palanga region to Lithuania on March 30, 1921, and the anniversary of the first recorded mention of Palanga on April 5, 1253, in a document about the division of the Courland territory between the Livonian Order and the Bishop of Riga.
On March 31, the Jonas Šliūpas Museum invites you to take part in an interactive orientation game-tour titled “Strolling through Šliūpas’ Palanga.” Participants will explore the streets and parks of Palanga following a specially designed route using a mobile app featuring narrated stories enriched with authentic photos, documents, and a rare, recently discovered video clip related to the city. Adding to the excitement, the tour includes a game element: the next stop on the route will only be revealed once the current one is reached. The full route is guided via GPS. Each stop challenges participants with questions, offering a thrilling way to compete with fellow explorers while engaging with historical narratives from a fresh perspective.[Click here for app usage instructions.]
Tour duration: 1.5 hours, route length: 3.8 km, along comfortable city surfaces, app requirement: 127 MB of free space on your phone. To register, please contact us via email at [email protected] or call +370 612 86114.
On April 2, the Jonas Šliūpas Museum invites you to join an interactive orientation game-tour titled “Palanga through Paulina’s Lens.” This experience takes you on a journey through the old resort town as seen through the camera of Paulina Mongirdaitė, the first Lithuanian woman photographer. Her picturesque images of Palanga’s seaside, early villas and parks, the Tyszkiewicz counts and their guests, and the first vacationers of the budding resort offer a captivating glimpse into a bygone era. What kind of Palanga did Paulina, a beloved local who chose a then-rare profession, see and wish to share with others? As you follow the route, you’ll discover what has vanished or changed beyond recognition—and what has remained unchanged over time. [Click here for app usage instructions.]
Tour duration: 1 to 1.5 hours, route length: 2.5 km, app requirement: 200 MB of free space on your phone.
Just like in the March 31 event, the tour is designed as a GPS-guided orientation game where each stop is revealed only once the previous one is completed. Each location includes a specially prepared challenge to solve.
Participants will receive small themed gifts featuring the symbol of Palanga’s Mayor Jonas Šliūpas.
