2025 12 10

A new and meaningful way to explore the history of Palanga is now available: the route “In the Footsteps of Burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas in Palanga” has been published in the Heritage Guide. It invites visitors to set out with a mobile device on a self-guided journey of discovery through the city where Jonas Šliūpas – the first burgomaster of Palanga – left a distinct mark through his work, ideas, and life.

The Heritage Guide is designed for anyone wishing to explore at their own pace. The information it provides helps not only to identify places, but also to understand their cultural and historical context. This new route presents the history of Palanga through the life of an outstanding figure – Jonas Šliūpas, a physician, promoter of Lithuanian identity, and the city’s first burgomaster. The route introduces more than twenty historical sites in Palanga.

The Heritage Guide is one of the largest and most comprehensive guides presenting cultural heritage and history in the western region of Lithuania. Implemented since 2014 by the Klaipėda County Ieva Simonaityte Public Library, the project aims to provide the public with reliable, up-to-date, and professionally curated information on cultural heritage.

Discover Palanga anew – following in the footsteps of J. Šliūpas and revisiting the city’s history, which remains alive in its streets, buildings, and in the memory of its people.

The route was prepared by the Palanga Burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania (LNM), in collaboration with the Klaipėda County Ieva Simonaityte Public Library.
