March 11 – Free Public Transport and a Festive Discount on Tickets to the National Museum of Lithuania

On March 11, the Day of the Restoration of Lithuanian Independence, Vilnius residents and city guests are invited to celebrate the national holiday at the branches of the National Museum of Lithuania. On the holiday, public transport in the capital will be free of charge, and all tickets for the branches of the National Museum of Lithuania will be valid for a 50 percent discount.

On the occasion of the national holiday, the National Museum of Lithuania invites you to take a fresh look at the history of Lithuania, covering the origins of statehood and modern experiences of freedom. Visitors will be able to view various permanent and temporary exhibitions, participate in education, workshops, and explore the museum spaces independently or with their families.

“March 11 is a day when we celebrate freedom not only through events, but also through a lively relationship with history. We invite you to experience it at the museum together with friends, family and loved ones. This is a meaningful way to celebrate the national holiday,” says Jurga Strimaitienė, Head of the NML Communication and Marketing Department.

On March 11, there will be traffic restrictions in the central part of Vilnius, so the museum will be conveniently accessible by free public transport: Gediminas Castle Tower, House of Histories, Kazys Varnelis House-Museum, Old Arsenal, House of Signatories, Castellan’s House and Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall. On March 11, a 50 percent discount on tickets will be valid for all visitors to the departments of the National Museum of Lithuania.

At 11:00, The Old Arsenal will host a brainstorming session “On the Path of the Nation: From Book Smugglers to March 11th,” where participants will be able to test their knowledge of Lithuanian history. At the same time, the Gediminas Castle Tower will host a creative workshop and thematic excursion “The Tower – a Symbol of the Road to Freedom,” inviting you to remember the significance of the historical object in the context of Lithuania’s freedom struggles.

At 12:00, an excursion and creative workshop “Celebrate Freedom!” will be held at the House of Signatories, and at 13:00, a thematic excursion “The President of Hope and March 11th,” dedicated to the activities of Stasys Lozoraitis Jr. and his contribution to restoring Lithuania’s independence.

At 13:00, at the House of Histories There will be an excursion to the international exhibition “A Soul Between Worlds”, which will introduce the Ainu culture and the research of Bronisław Pilsudski – a story about the knowledge of different cultures and the destinies of nations, relevant to the celebration of the Day of the Restoration of Lithuanian Independence. Also, at 17:30 there will be an excursion to the exhibition “Riding the Wave of Paris Exhibitions: Ethnography, Cultural Diplomacy and Identity”.

Families with children are invited to the Vilnius Defensive Wall Bastion at 14:00, where during the educational game “Yellow-Green-Red” participants will solve tasks, look for hidden words and from them compose the text of the Oath of a Young Lithuanian Citizen, which everyone will read together at the end of the session.
