A contemporary reinterpretation of the Lithuanian wayside shrine tradition, this three-metre wooden sculptural object presents the figure of a child holding a mask. The motif raises questions of identity, self-knowledge, and the roles an individual assumes within a community.
The work was created to mark the 175th anniversary of the birth of Jonas Basanavičius. Reflecting his wide-ranging interests in medicine, folklore, science, and cultural self-understanding, and spanning the fields of historical memory, folklore, and contemporary art, the sculpture translates these themes into a symbolic and open-ended visual form that engages the viewer directly.
Unlike traditional shrines, the work does not reference a specific saint, myth, or folkloric figure. Instead, it invites each viewer to bring their own reading to it. As in folk tales and oral traditions, where meanings shift as they are passed from person to person, the sculpture encourages the audience to act as co-authors of its interpretations.
