The National Museum of Lithuania Presents a Crowdfunding Platform to the Public

2026 03 27

The National Museum of Lithuania (NML) is introducing a crowdfunding platform on its website, which invites you to contribute directly to the initiatives implemented by the museum. This initiative aims to strengthen the public’s connection with the museum and create opportunities for everyone to become an active participant in the preservation of cultural heritage and the implementation of new ideas.

An Initiative That Encourages Public Engagement

The NML crowdfunding platform provides information about each project – its goals, implementation progress and the support needed, so supporters can clearly understand what they are contributing to. This aims not only to attract financial support, but also to strengthen the public’s connection with the museum, encourage engagement and deepen understanding of the creation and preservation of cultural memory. It is also planned to publish news about the funds raised and the progress of project implementation on the NML’s social media channels, website and crowdfunding platform.

“Today, the museum is not only a custodian of history and museum values, but also an active creator, inviting the public to become part of this process. With the new crowdfunding platform, we aim to create conditions for everyone to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and the implementation of new ideas,” says Rūta Kačkutė, Director General of the NML.

The museum projects presented on the NML crowdfunding platform are divided into categories – “Museum Values”, “Exhibitions” and “Other Initiatives”, revealing a wide range of the museum’s activities and its main directions.

Support Initiatives According to Different Interests

The projects presented on the platform mark different directions of the museum’s activities and invite you to contribute to what is most important to you personally – the strengthening of regions, the preservation of heritage and the creation of innovations.

One of the projects presented on the new crowdfunding platform is the initiative “Gift a Cherry Tree to Jonas Basanavičius”, dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of the nation’s patriarch. It aims to restore the cherry orchard of J. Basanavičius’ birthplace and create a living, growing symbol of memory in the region.

The director of the J. Basanavičius Birthplace Museum, Rūta Vasiliauskienė, emphasizes that this initiative is intended not only to mark the anniversary of the patriarch of the nation, but also to bring the community together:

“We want spring to bloom here in a few years with cherry blossoms, which would remind not only of J. Basanavičius, but also of the fact that history can be created with our hands. A tree, like a community, grows slowly, but its value remains for a long time. The replanted cherry grove will become a space connecting different generations – a quiet place for visitors, intended for being, resting and communicating,” says R. Vasiliauskienė.

At the same time, the project “Let’s Preserve the Brest Bible for Future Generations” is focused on the preservation of cultural heritage. The 16th century publication – the first translation of the Holy Scriptures into Polish in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – today requires professional restoration in order to be preserved for future generations.

Supporters interested in innovation are also invited to contribute to the creation of a Lithuanian-speaking humanoid robot. This project will become part of the museum’s upcoming exhibition on the history of Lithuanian high-tech and will help visitors learn about the development of science interactively.

“These projects reveal how we can tell the history of Lithuania in different ways – by preserving unique heritage objects and at the same time creating new, engaging experiences for visitors. They also highlight the diversity of the museum’s activities and its constant pursuit of updating heritage for today’s society,” says Simona Širvydaitė-Šliupienė, Director of the NML House of Histories.

The idea for the platform was born in 2025 during the cultural hackathon event “HACKcultureATHON”, which was attended by several NML teams. The crowdfunding solution proposed by one of them was later developed into an innovative crowdfunding platform that allows the public to directly engage in the museum’s activities.
