Summer Plan – Create by the Seaside: Apply for a Residency at “Kūrybatorija” in the Jonas Šliūpas Museum
2025 06 04
Can creative work, collaboration with a museum, and evening strolls by the sea go hand in hand? Absolutely – if you decide to develop your projects in the residency space “Kūrybatorija” of the National Museum of Lithuania, located in the Jonas Šliūpas Museum, just 200 meters from the sand dunes and the Baltic Sea (Vytauto g. 23A, Palanga). This specialized residency space is designed for those seeking not only a desk to work at but also inspiration beyond the window.
A Space for Museum-Based Creativity, Research, and Collaboration
This is not your typical artist residency. “Kūrybatorija” is a space tailored for people who create for and work with museums: educators, researchers, curators, artists, art historians, and cultural mediators. It is a place to implement your creative or research projects, develop joint initiatives with the National Museum of Lithuania, experiment, reflect on history and the present, and get involved in both museum activities and the cultural life of Palanga.

The “Kūrybatorija” residency program emphasizes co-creation, community involvement, and the exchange of knowledge. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences, lead creative workshops, present their work to local residents, engage in discussions, and become part of a living museum practice.
“We want to bring together people who feel close to the museum community—so they have space to create, get to know each other, develop shared ideas, and become active participants in the cultural life of Palanga. And the sea breeze and the presence of like-minded individuals can become a great source of inspiration,” says Nijolė Laužikienė, Head of the Jonas Šliūpas Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania.
Creating Among Pines and Waves
The residency space is located within the territory of the Jonas Šliūpas Museum – a historic corner of the Palanga resort. It offers five single rooms and two double rooms, two shared bathrooms, a small kitchen, a workroom with Wi-Fi, a projector, printer, and TV screen. There is also an experimental space, a meeting room, and access to the museum’s educational and event spaces, which can be used to present your work, organize events, meetings, and discussions.
All of this is just a few minutes’ walk from the sea! After a productive day, you can plunge into the waves, stroll along sandy paths, or simply breathe in the tranquility of the pine forest.
How to Become a Resident?
Residencies are available year-round, though summer is the most active season. Until September 30, the daily rate for a single room is 30 EUR, or 25 EUR per day if staying more than three days. A double room costs 40 EUR per day, or 30 EUR per day for stays over three days.
To apply for a residency at “Kūrybatorija,” applicants are invited to fill out the residency application form, provide a brief description of their creative proposal, and indicate their preferred time period. Selection is carried out by museum professionals and invited experts, so the proposed project should be related to museum activities, education, exhibition development, creative projects for museums, or other relevant cultural practices.
