And he gave me a ring of gold…

Wedding symbols in Kudirkos Naumiestis and its surroundings in 1918–1990

From times immemorial, the decision of two people to join their destinies and make their marriage vows in church in front of their relatives has been one of the most significant events in life. This special event has always stood out for its customs. As society modernised, the old customs changed; traditions, attire and clothing details from cities came to rural areas.

Such changes also occurred in Kudirkos Naumiestis and its surroundings, and they are clearly reflected in the photographs, wedding clothing and symbolic attributes displayed in this exhibition. The local people of the region contributed a lot to the organisation of this exhibition by sharing their personal articles, photographs and memories.
