Thousands of little rings, hand-spun woollen and linen threads, and hundreds of hours of a jeweller’s work—that is what it took to produce these amazing women’s caps. As if this kind of luxury were not enough, artisans managed to dye the threads in blue and cast the chain links from the alloys of two different metals, causing some to acquire silver and gold hues. This kind of head covering was worn a thousand years ago by Samogitian women. Just imagine—such caps could weigh as much as one and a half kilograms, and the wearers of this kind of headwear were much shorter, and possibly thinner, than contemporary women. But reconstructions reveal that the caps were elastic, covered the head and stayed in place, and so were comfortable enough to wear.
