History of Lithuania in Contemporary Medals
The exhibition “History of Lithuania in Contemporary Medals” is open from 6 April to 31 August 2017 at The National Museum of Lithuania, Old Arsenal.
The exhibition covers an almost 800-year period of the history of Lithuania, from the first mention of the name of Lithuania to the Third Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, commemorated in medals. Among the exhibits are works created in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century celebrating the honourable past of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: portraits of Lithuanian rulers, medals dedicated to prominent historical, cultural and public figures of Lithuania Major and Lithuania Minor from the fifteenth to eighteenth century, among them medals devoted to the Christianization of Lithuania and Samogitia, early architecture of Lithuanian cities and Lithuanian heraldry.
The exhibition includes works of different styles and techniques by both outstanding masters of medal art and representatives of the young generation, made from various materials. These works constitute a spectacular artistic and historical whole.
Among the creators of the medals are top-notch artists: a winner of the National Award, Petras Repšys, a representative of the International Federation of Medallists in Lithuania, Antanas Olbutas, medallists successfully participating in exhibitions in Lithuania and beyond, Petras Gintalas, Romualdas Inčirauskas, Skaistė Žilienė, Petras Baronas, Juozas Kalinauskas, Lina Kalinauskaitė, and others. Their medals, today held at the National Museum of Lithuania, are objects of art and history commemorating significant events of the history and culture of Lithuania.
